What is it?
One Drop is a digital diabetes management platform that creates one simple location for tracking health data and observing patterns. The One Drop mobile app allows users to log glucose levels and monitor medication, diet, and exercise. As an app user, you can also set personal goals, work with a personal health coach, and connect with other users working hard to manage their diabetes. In addition to the app, they also offer a connected FDA-approved Bluetooth blood glucose monitor and supplies.
Why is it innovative?
One Drop has created an app that can offer a more complete and centralized location for people with diabetes to monitor patterns in glucose and how their lifestyle is affecting those changes. They have also gone a step further and offer a coaching program through the app in which you can link up with a Certified Diabetes Educator. This program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
App users now have the added feature of 8-hour blood glucose predictions for type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, and gestational diabetes powered by AI (BioSpace). Clinical data is important at One Drop and their technology boasts impressive results. A1c, a critical measure of average glucose levels over time, was lowered by 1.32 percentage points in 12 weeks of using the One Drop mobile app (One Drop).
The Market
Twenty percent of One Drop’s employees have diabetes so they know a thing or two about living and thriving with a chronic illness and they are certainly not alone. The American Diabetes Association reports that in 2013, more than 9% of the population had diabetes which equals 30 million Americans. In addition to that, approximately 1.5 million more Americans are diagnosed each year (ADA). Not surprisingly then, treatment for diabetes in America cost $327 billion in 2017 (ADA). Based on those statistics, there is a large and growing demand for better prevention and management options. Diabetes technology is an important area of expansion in health tech for 2019.
